Welcome to SGM! I’m Tammy Small: wife, mom of three, educator, and entrepreneur. I love bringing people together by creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere with an inviting home, a beautiful presentation, and of course, delicious food!
I grew up in a family that loved to cook and have parties. My parents both came from big families, so holidays were always spent surrounded by a big group of friends and relatives all eating delicious food, drinking, and laughing together. My dad made huge Sunday dinners and my first question was always, “Who’s coming over?” If his response was “It’s just us” I always picked up the phone and invited some of my aunts and uncles over.
When I married my childhood sweetheart, who became a Naval Flight Officer, we both knew the hardest part for me would be leaving my family. (Although moving to San Diego from Chicago in December made it a heck of a lot easier!)
I quickly made friends and found that having other Navy families over for dinner, especially wives when our husbands were gone, was one of my favorite things to do. Creating what I had growing up helped me when I missed my family in Chicago, and helped me deal with the loneliness I felt when my husband was deployed. (He loved hearing about a party I threw on our front lawn the day he left for a 6 month deployment. What can I say? Why sit around and cry when you can throw a party!)
When my husband was home, he shared my enthusiasm for hosting fabulous gatherings. Our friends became our family, and picking up the phone on a weekend afternoon to invite our “family” for dinner was a common occurrence in the Small household. 7 moves and 3 children later, my husband and I continue to share our passion with our “family”! I’ve learned that things do not have to be big and elaborate. It’s the small gestures and personal details that matter, and make people feel special. I hope that my healthy recipes, and tips about home décor and hospitality will help you to create your own small gestures to share with others!

Small Gesture Sunday
Whenever I’m out and about with my teenage son, it warms my heart when he holds every door open for every person he sees. I watch the reactions my son gets from people, and how that small action can put a smile on a person’s face.
Gesture is defined as an action performed to convey one’s feelings or intentions. What would happen if we all performed a small action during the week to convey positive feelings or intentions? Every Sunday I post a Small Gesture that my family and I will be doing during the week. I hope that you will join us! I believe small gestures can have a big impact!
Life on Lochness
After living the Navy life for 10 years, my husband and I chose to make Texas our home in 1999. In 2000, we moved into the house we had built on Lochness Drive with our 9 year old daughter, 7 year old son, and our soon to be born baby boy. Countless birthday parties, tooth fairy visits, sleepovers, family dinners, and room makeovers we are still here. This is where I share our family life, my love for home decor, hospitality, and DIY projects. Life on Lochness is always adventure!
Health and Happiness
In February of 2013, my husband had a heart attack at the age of 45. Since then, we have been on a journey to live a healthier lifestyle. Clean eating has become an important part of our lives. We have learned that eating clean does not mean you can only eat salad and chicken breasts. Here I will share the things I have learned about nutrition and healthy living. You will find tips about clean eating, meal planning and prep, and delicious, healthy recipes.
I don’t know how it started but somehow I’ve become addicted to collecting dishes. One of my favorite things to do is setting my dining room and kitchen tables for every occasion I can come up with. It’s very rare to drop by my house and not see a set table. I drive the males around here crazy because after dinner every night we hand wash the dishes and reset the table. I know, I have a serious problem! Here I hope you will find some inspiration and ideas for setting your table on occasion or maybe every day!
