I use Trader Joe’s Everything but the Bagel Seasoning on the regular around here! During the historic winter storm here in Texas a few weeks ago, I used the last of mine. TJ’s seasoning ingredients include poppy seeds, white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, dried garlic, dried onion, and sea salt flakes. Since we were homebound, and I had all of the ingredients, I experimented and made my own version.
One of the big advantages of making it yourself is being able to customize the ratios and ingredients. If you don’t like something, you can leave it out. You can use more of one ingredient than another, and you can add an ingredient. I have always found TJ’s version to be on the salty side, so I played with ratios until I had the perfect amount for me. I also added some flax seeds and subbed Redmond coarse sea salt for the sea salt flakes.

Homemade Everything but the Bagel Seasoning is a deliciously crunchy mix of seeds and spices inspired by Trader Joe's famous sesame season blend. This DIY version is easy to make with just a few pantry staples, and it's customizable to suit your unique taste buds.
- 1 1/2 tbsp minced onion
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- 1 tbsp black sesame seeds
- 1 tbsp minced garlic
- 1 tbsp flax seeds
- 1/2 tbsp poppy seeds
- 1/2 tbsp coarse sea salt or sea salt flakes
Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container.
We recommend using organic ingredients whenever possible.
